Meta AI started showing up in my Facebook and Instagram experience, and I can’t figure out how to turn it off or opt out. I’ve checked settings and help pages but the steps are unclear or seem outdated. I need help finding the current way to disable Meta AI features or limit how my data is used.
You don’t get a full off switch for Meta AI on Facebook or Instagram right now. Meta rolled it into search, chat, and some creation tools. So the answer is annoyng, but simple.
What you can do:
-
Mute it in Messenger or Instagram DMs.
Open the Meta AI chat.
Tap the name at the top.
Use Mute, Archive, or Delete chat. -
Stop using it in search.
Don’t tap the blue circle or AI prompt.
Use the normal search results when they appear. -
Limit AI features in apps.
Check Settings, then search for things like AI, Imagine, or message suggestions.
These menus move around a lot, so older help pages are often wrong. -
Object to AI data use, if available in your region.
For Facebook or Instagram:
Settings and privacy, Privacy Center, AI at Meta, then look for a form about info used for generative AI.
In the EU and UK, this is more common. In the US, options are less clear. -
Hide AI content where possible.
Long press suggested AI posts or chats.
Tap Not interested, Hide, or similar.
Short version, you can reduce it, but you can’t fully remove Meta AI from the apps rn. If you want, post your phone type and app version and ppl here can give the exact taps.
@waldgeist is basically right that there’s no real master kill switch, but I’d push back a little on one part: “just don’t use it” is not really an opt out, it’s more like avoiding the puddle in your kitchen instead of fixing the leak.
A couple things worth checking that are different from muting/hiding the chat:
- Turn off app updates for a bit if Meta AI only appeared after a recent update. Not a forever fix, obv, but it can stop new UI changes from getting worse.
- Use Facebook/Instagram in a mobile browser instead of the app. The AI stuff is often less shoved in your face there.
- If you use Messenger, switch your default chat habits to SMS/iMessage/WhatsApp/Signal for a while. Sounds dumb, but reducing interaction can stop it from surfacing as aggressively.
- Check your Activity Log and ad settings. This won’t remove Meta AI, but it can reduce some personalization tied to your account behavior.
- If you’re in the EU/UK, use the actual privacy objection form, not just the help page maze. That’s the only semi-real “opt out” route rn.
So yeah, full disable? nope. Reduce exposure? kinda. Meta made this wierdly hard on purpose, imo.
